Oystercatcher Top Gun
The sun was hot this Long Beach day:
More like July than the end of May.
Mom herded her chicks to relief from the sun:
Birds always know what must be done.
Top Gun thought he was already—cool:
But there were hungry gulls—and mom was no fool.
She soon regathered…
…all the chicks to her side…
…where Top Gun practiced…
…his soar and glide:
Save the children,
it’s instinctive, you know.
